Gemstones are one of the key economic and industrial minerals in Nigeria. They are natural organic matter, minerals or stones, which are present in igneous rocks and alluvial gravels. They are substances of beauty when cut and polished for jewellery and they are part of alternative and complementary medicine from pre-historic times.

Nigeria has deposits of different gemstones including corundum, beryl, quartz tourmaline, garnet, aquamarine, topaz, amethyst, etc. Some of the gemstones like sapphire, emerald, aquamarine, tourmaline, zircon and garnet are amongst the world’s most scarce gems. Tourmaline

The Nigerian Tourmaline is exceptional as it has both primary and secondary colours, many varieties of colours can be mined in Nigeria, unlike some countries in Africa and other parts of the world, where tourmaline deposits have a specific colour or few colours of tourmaline deposits. Tourmaline is deposited in Kaduna, Nasarawa, and the Osun States of Nigeria.

Aquamarine

Aquamarine can be found in places in Nigeria like Isanlu and Okene in Kogi State; Akwanga; Igbo Ora, and Ijebu Igbo in Ogun State; Nasarawa; Ibadan in Oyo State; Jenta; Agwada and Igwo in Nasarawa State. Aquamarine is another widely known gemstone in Nigeria. It is sold in large quantities in the country.It comes in varieties ranging from the mineral beryl green-blue to blue colors.

Amethyst

Amethyst is the world’s most popular purple gem.  Amethyst in Nigeria is of very high quality and usually has a purple color. It is sourced in places like Nasawara, Bauchi, Oyo, Kano, Kaduna, and lots more. Apart from these gemstones, other types of gemstones found in small quantities in Nigeria include; Kunzite, Ruby, Arget, Heliodort, Opal, Tanzanite, Goshenite, and Morganite.

Topaz

Topaz is another attractive gemstone in Nigeria is topaz. It comes in colors ranging from white to blue, oftentimes; it is used as a diamond substitute.Topaz can be sourced in Oyo State; Akwanga and Jenta in Nasarawa State; Bauchi; and Jos in Plateau State.

Emerald

Emeralds are a rare gemstone in Nigeria, but they can be found in some parts of the country mainly in Kaduna State, Kano State, Bauchi State and Plateau State. Emeralds are known for their unique characteristics and often have a lighter green color due to the presence of iron and vanadium. They tend to have inclusions Emeralds are relatively hard (7.5-8 on the Mohs scale), making them durable and suitable for jewelry.
